School Uniforms Debate

There has been a debate going for many years now about the pros and cons of school uniforms for children.  A lot of the debate is between the children and the adults in the situation, though some of the time, the parents side with the children.  So, what exactly is the concern?

Those who feel that uniforms are a good way to go say that can help get rid of envy.  Some children are not able to afford expensive clothing, while others get nothing but designer names.  Having uniforms, it is felt, will help alleviate some of the teasing and jealousy that goes along with these things, and is normal for children to go through.  Another thought by those who make these decisions is that it will allow the children to focus more on their school work, and less on what they are going to wear, thus improving grades.

Many others feel that these are silly arguments.  They feel that clothing, makeup, hairstyles, and more are a way of being able to express yourself.  This is extremely important for children, especially in their teenage years.  These children are learning about themselves, and who they are, and having their freedoms stifled is seen as detrimental.  The argument that it will help get rid of bullying and help students focus on their school work more is just silly, most in this group agree.  Kids are kids, and there will always be someone picking on someone else for something.  Making the assumption that taking away the individuality of the children will help with this is ridiculous.  Teenagers especially will find other things to preoccupy them from their school work, so taking away their clothing choices will not help this, either.

No matter what side of the fence you are on, it is something to consider.  Even if the debate hasn’t reached you yet, it may one day.
